At Kelly Phillips Productions, we pride ourselves on being on top of e-learning development models and innovations, and incorporating them into the programs that we produce. We have been developing our programs according to SCORM and LMS standards for a number of years.
SCORM is the acronym for the Sharable Content Object Reference Model. SCORM-compliant content must be written and developed as stand-alone, reusable chunks of information. The application of this model provides a common framework for the development of reusable instructional "objects" for computer and web-based learning. These objects may consist of a single page of information, a topic or lesson, or even a single image or animation. SCORM compliance is essential if the program is destined to be delivered via an LMS, or Learning Management System.
The LMS is a software that manages, tracks, and quantifies all of the training, continuing education, certification, and other learning activities in a company. It manages training content and learners, and evolves as more "learning objects", or lessons, are developed. In a pharmaceutical company, the LMS allows trainers to assign curricula to sales representatives, without being constrained by scheduling, traveling, and meeting with instructors. And sales representatives can learn anything, anywhere, at any time, upgrading their education and skills at any point in their careers. The LMS knows what is to be delivered to the individual learner, when the learner has mastered a skill or competency, and can direct the learner to appropriate review material, or to new material.
One could think of SCORM as a vast array of books in a library, and the LMS as the delivery system of the particular "reading list" for the learner.
